What the Rating Actually Means

If you've been comparing vacuum cleaners, you've probably noticed "H13 HEPA filter" listed as a headline spec. It's the filtration class that's become the de facto standard for domestic, allergy-focused vacuums.

What "H13" actually specifies

H13 is a filter class defined under the EN 1822 standard, the European classification system for high-efficiency air filters. It requires a filter to capture at least 99.95% of particles at the "most penetrating particle size" (MPPS) — the specific particle size, roughly 0.3 microns, that is hardest for any filter to trap. Particles both larger and smaller than the MPPS are actually caught more easily, so the 99.95% figure represents the filter's worst-case performance, not its average.

How Often Should You Replace an H13 HEPA Filter? What Miele, Dyson, Nilfisk and Numatic Recommend

There's no single industry-wide answer to "how often should I change my H13 filter?" — it depends on how the manufacturer built the filtration system, whether the filter is washable or disposable, and how heavily the machine is used. Rather than guess, here's what five of the major vacuum brands actually publish on the subject, quoted from their own support material.

-Miele

Disposable HEPA AirClean filter. Replace when the built-in time strip indicator turns fully red — roughly 50 hours of use, about 1 year of average vacuuming

-Dyson

Washable pre/post-motor filters (most models). Dyson recommend that you wash at least once a month; no fixed replacement date since the filter is reusable — replace only if damaged.

-Nilfisk (domestic)

Disposable HEPA filter. Once a year for typical use (1–3 vacuums a week); every 6–12 months, or sooner if symptoms flare, for allergy sufferers

-Nilfisk (industrial)

Disposable HEPA filter. Roughly annually if upstream filters are well maintained, but quarterly to semi-annually for heavier dust loads or stricter safety requirements

-Numatic (Henry/Hetty)
